If you've been looking at local AI agent runtimes in 2026, the two names that keep coming up are Froots and OpenClaw. They solve an adjacent problem — running capable AI agents on your own machine, against your own data — but they take different shapes, and the right one depends on how you work.

The philosophy split: chat-first vs canvas-first
The easiest way to feel the difference: OpenClaw routes by channel, Froots routes by intent.
In OpenClaw, you post a message in #clipbot and Clipper picks it up because it owns that channel. You post in #dealflow and Dealflow picks it up. The affordance is messaging; the mental model is "which agent am I talking to right now."
In Froots, you highlight a paragraph of your note and @-mention an agent, or you press ⌘⇧R and the routine compiler picks the right agent based on what the sentence says. The affordance is editing; the mental model is "what do I want to happen, and who's best at it."
Both are legitimate. Chat-first is less friction when you already know which agent you want. Canvas-first is less friction when you're figuring out the request while you're writing it — which is most of the time, for most people.
Where OpenClaw wins
